Mission Statement Gays and Lesbians United Against Discrimination is dedicated to the promotion of equal rights for LGBT families and individuals through various means. We will additionally provide services to the LGBT community, allies and others in need of assistance. ○ Current Outreach and Services: » Filing to become a 501c3 » Provide connections and resources; coming out, suicide prevention, hate crime reporting, police accountability, denied housing, business firing, etc -- We will confirm these issues are brought to the attention to the proper agencies, and will confirm follow-up/proper action is taken. ○ Future Outreach and Services: » Confirm that thorough and adequate action is taken on anti-LGBT matters » Increase LGBT and allies voter turn-out » Implement a speaker bureau to increase education and awareness ○ Future Outreach and Services (Tempe/Phoenix, AZ Shelter) (This shelter will have a primarily focus on lgbtq youth, but will also assist and intake those whom are not of the lgbtq community – youth, adults, and elderly) » Provide family and individual counseling for parents of LGBT youth and to the LGBT youth themselves. » Provide family and individual counseling to non-LGBT youth and families. » HIV and STD Testing » Have (__) emergency beds – (per night) » Have (__) permanent beds – (2 months; unless expanded by case worker or executive) » Medical Attention » Community room with daily activities; open to the public » Provide “emergency essential packages” – food, beverages, hygiene and clothing – to walk-ins or folks on the street. ○ Future Outreach and Services (Chicago, IL Shelter) (This shelter will have a primarily focus on lgbtq youth, but will also assist and intake those whom are not of the lgbtq community – youth, adults, and elderly) » Provide family and individual counseling for parents of LGBT youth and to the LGBT youth themselves. » Provide family and individual counseling to non-LGBT youth and families. » HIV and STD Testing » Have (__) emergency beds – per night » Have (__) permanent beds – (2 months; unless expanded by case worker or executive) » Medical Attention » Community room with daily activities; open to the public » Provide “emergency essential packages” – food, beverages, hygiene and clothing – to walk-ins or folks on the street. ○ Current Policy/Legislative » Educate, speak, and work with city, country, state, and federal officials on lgbt matters. ○ Future Policy/Legislative » Overturning anti-lgbt laws » Organizing action teams nationally that will get involved and active in local policy. » Work with national cities in creating units similar to the Gay and Lesbian Liaison Unit of Washington, DC. » Work with school district in confirming all students are protected, including LGBTQ. » Overturn FDA ban on LGBT blood donors » Overturn Boy Scouts policy on banning openly-gay participation. » Make an office addition – Office of Global LGBT Matters (Similar to; Office for Global Women’s Issue) within the State Department Authorization Act » Joining the efforts of The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force in including LGBT youth people in suicide prevention curriculum standards. » Joining the efforts of The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force in including LGBT Inclusive Implementation of Runaway and Homeless Youth Act.
